One Wadden Sea: Our Heritage. Our Future.

2019 marks the 10th anniversary of the Wadden Sea's inscription as a World Heritage site. To celebrate this special year, the Wadden Sea community set up an anniversary programme with various regional and local events and activites for you as Wadden Sea resident or visitor to join in. Highlight of the anniversary celebrations was a transboundary Anniversary Bike Tour. Impressions of the tour and anniversary activities can be found below.

Anniversary Bike Tour 2019

One Wadden Sea. Two Wheels. Three Countries.

1000 kilometres, 550 cyclists, 73 events, 2380 visitors – In June 2019 two cyclist groups started on 18 June in Ho Bugt, Denmark, and on 19 June on Vlieland, Netherlands. En route, the cyclists stopped at local celebrations, thereby drawing a golden thread to unite all Wadden Sea regions. Our tour crossed the finish line on 30 June in Wilhelmshaven. The tour was regularly accompanied by interested day visitors, including school classes, clubs, NGOs and individual participants. To reflect on the tour and this year and to say thank you to the many organisations and people involved, the organisers released a video with the tour impressions.

The Anniversary Bike Tour and the final event were sponsored by the Danish Ministry for Environment and Food, the Dutch Ministry for Agriculture, Nature and Food Quality, the German Federal Ministry for Environment, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety, as well as the Lower Saxon Ministry for Environment, Energy, Building, and Climate Protection and the European Union in the framework of the Interreg project PROWAD LINK.
